We all get stuck in routines and patterns. It’s so easy being a creature of habit, isn’t it? I know I’m guilty of it, big time. The downside of doing the same thing, day in and day out, is that we’re not learning anything new, which gives us limited life experiences to draw upon creatively.

As much as I would love to just watch the same TV shows, eat the same foods, and listen to the same music over and over, I understand the value – no, the necessity – of trying new things.

MAKE A DIFFERENT CHOICE

Author, humourist and comedy coach Judy Carter, who I interviewed for my book Capture My Attention, is a huge advocate of trying new things. “We all have choices on how to design our life but we don’t always realise those choices are there,” Judy explained. “If you always climb steps starting with your right foot, lead with your left foot. Make a different choice because that brings different opportunities.”

Now, I am in no way encouraging you to embark on daredevil activities – trust me, you will never catch me bungee jumping – but I do make a point of trying new endeavours because you never know who you’ll meet, what you’ll experience, or how it will make you feel.

OPEN A NEW DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY

So, add something new into your calendar this week (and, no, cleaning out the garage doesn’t count). Sign up for a Thai cooking lesson, join your salsa-dancing friend, or agree to model for a life drawing class. Whatever you’re into, just say yes. The more life experiences you have to draw from, the greater your pool of creative inspiration will be.
